Zig Ziglar's, hallmark slogan. I couldn't agree more.

Without a goal you can't get anywhere. You can't achieve anything.


A goal is a dream with a deadline.

As author, Leo B. Helzel, says, "A goal is a dream with a deadline." In order to achieve your dreams, you have to clearly define your dreams first.

All goals start off as dreams. When you define them clearly and set deadlines to them, your dreams then become achievable goals.

The problem is that most people don't take the time to define their goals in specific and tangible terms, and set a timetable for attaining them.

A goal like, "I want my business to be successful someday!" is not an achievable goal because it's fuzzy. You have to specifically define what successful means. You also have to define what someday means. Exactly when do you want your business to be successful?

To one person, being successful might mean becoming the president of a large company and owning a million dollar home by the time he is forty.

To someone else, it might mean completing a college degree and serving her community as an elected official within the next 5 years.

Another person might define success as owning his or her own business, and generating $100,000 a year in income in 36 months.

Did you notice that each of those goals was clear, specific, and had a specific time-frame?

Many people are concerned that if they don't achieve their goals within the time-frames that they set for them, they will feel like failures.

If you have that mindset, it's imperative to your success that you change it immediately. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Your dreams, goals and deadlines are yours -- no one elses. You have the power to adjust your goals at any time, and you can reschedule your time-frames. Nothing is set in stone.

The real reason that you want to clarify your goals and your time-frames for achieving them, has to do with providing you with a clear target that you can aim for. You can't hit a target you can't see.

Setting a deadline gives you the incentive to take timely action. If you don't actually reach your specific goal within the time-frame that you set, but you have improved your results, then you have succeeded.

You are never a failure when you are working towards achieving your goals.

If you're serious about growing your business, then it's imperative for you to start setting goals for your marketing. And if you're going to set goals, you might as well set Smart Goals.

Smart Goals
  • Specific
    Use specific numbers to describe your goals ($25,000 increased profit, 20 new customers per month, etc.)
  • Measurable
    Set specific, numeric ways to track your goals. Not, "I’m off to a good start." Instead, "I’ve accomplished 25% so far."
  • Achievable
    Don’t set goals like "Retire like a millionaire," if you have no intention of doing what it takes to achieve that goal. Be realistic. Saying you’d like to make $100,000 by next Saturday is probably pushing it. Make your big goals more manageable by breaking them down into smaller goals.
  • Relevant
    Set goals that will benefit you. The more your goals directly relate to you, the more you’ll want to achieve them.
  • Timeliness
    State your deadlines. Set a date and time of day for your mini-goals and a deadline for your ultimate goals. Get your calendar and start a countdown.
Setting specific goals is your first step to improving your monthly marketing results.
