Q. How big of a list do I need to test my direct mail letter? I am about to do an experimental direct mailing for my business. I have access to a mailing list for a number of zip codes that I want to target. Some of the zips have thousands of names available. How many direct mailings should be sent out for this experiment? 100, 1000, 5000? Any suggestions would be appreciated. A. Marketing expert, Joe Gracia, responds: Since the expected response rate from direct mail today is 1%, we wouldn't recommend testing anything less than 500. Of course, you may hit the jackpot and get a 4-5% response. Keep in mind, that your response is going to depend on how well you have matched your mailing list and your offer. If you are offering a pool service to home owners, then you wouldn't want to mail it to a zip code area of apartment dwellers. Good luck with your tests.
